Holding value & values together: Reflections from Aintree Group Legal on the Chief Justice’s recent address
Chief Justice Niall’s recent address, “Value and Values”, offers a timely and powerful reminder of what it means to practise law in a way that truly matters. Not just for commerce, but for community, dignity, fairness, and long-term trust.
At Aintree Group Legal, we found his speech deeply resonant with how we see our role as legal practitioners and custodians of community wellbeing.
Below are some reflections, and how we at Aintree Group Legal strive to live out both value and values in our everyday work.
Key themes that stood out
Interdependence of value and values
Legal work isn’t only about rules or transactions. Its legitimacy depends on ethical foundations, such as fairness, independence, equality and access to justice. Without those, “value” in the economic or institutional sense risks being hollow.
Investment in people and institutions
We were particularly struck by the Chief Justice’s focus on people: early-career practitioners, regional communities, diversity, and wellbeing. The way we structure mentorship, support, and institutional care has lasting impact.
The role of technology and infrastructure
Technology and updated facilities can improve access and efficiency, but they must always serve the values that underpin our justice system: due process, transparency, and the rule of law.
How Aintree Group aligns
At Aintree Group, we see clear connections between the Chief Justice’s message and our own values of courageous custodianship of community. His call to balance value and values challenges us to reflect on how we already act, and where we can go further.
Community connection & support
Community is at the core of what we do. Whether through our Gather for Good events, sponsorship of local sport, arts and charitable causes, or pro bono legal work, we believe in giving back. For us, this is about ensuring that access to justice and support reaches those who need it most.
Wellbeing, diversity & mentorship
We’re proud of the inclusive, supportive culture we have built, but we know there is always room to grow. We are committed to offering stronger mentorship for junior lawyers, prioritising wellbeing and resilience, and providing flexible work arrangements and mental health initiatives.
Integrity & ethical practice
Law is not just about transactions, it is a public good. We strive to uphold fairness, transparency, and ethical decision-making in every client interaction. We strive to make our values an explicit part of our internal conversations, ensuring that every decision reflects not just compliance, but justice.
Technology, infrastructure & forward thinking
As a multidisciplinary group, we have a unique perspective on how integrated systems, expertise and tools can deliver better outcomes for clients. We are already investing in smarter ways to serve – from cloud-based systems to centralised processes and emerging AI tools.
Looking ahead, we will continue to explore new ways to collaborate with courts and legal bodies on innovation, always with fairness and due process at the centre.
Our challenge
Chief Justice Niall reminds us that legitimacy in the legal sector is fragile. Once trust in courts or lawyers is lost, it is difficult to rebuild. This is a challenge to all of us firms, courts, regulators, and practitioners, to ensure that in every act, from the smallest client interaction to systemic reform, we preserve our values.
For Aintree Group Legal, that means:
- asking, “does this decision or process uphold fairness, access, and align with our values?” for each matter brought before us;
- listening to community voices, especially those often unheard — regional, marginalised, or under-represented;
- being transparent about where we fall short, and working to improve.
We cannot have the value of law without its values. And we cannot sustain values without ongoing investment in people, practice, institutions, and community. Chief Justice Niall’s speech is both a reminder and a rallying cry – that in the legal profession, what we do must always be shaped by what we believe.
At Aintree Group Legal, we are proud of the community we have built, the causes we support, and the team who carry forward these ideals.
We also recognise there is always more to do. As we move forward, we pledge to hold both value and values in equal regard, for the good of our clients, our team, and the broader community.
We welcome feedback and conversation from colleagues, peers, and community partners about how we can all do better together.
