A Letter from Your Lawyer (When You Turn 18)
25 January 2026
You might not expect to receive a letter from a lawyer at 18, but your parents have asked me to prepare a Will for you now that you are an adult.
Making a Will may feel like something for later in life, but there are some clear reasons to get this sorted early. Even as a young adult, having a Will lets you appoint trusted decision‑makers, name who should receive your property, and make practical arrangements that spare your loved ones uncertainty if something happens to you.
A few reasons to take it seriously now:
- You probably own more than you realise. That may include a car, savings from part‑time work, superannuation, inheritances or interests in family trusts.
- Without a Will, the laws of intestacy determine who inherits. That often leads to outcomes that don’t match your wishes. If you prefer certain people to benefit, such as siblings, a partner, or others, a Will lets you say so.
- Sentimental items matter. Small things like a watch, a pet or digital assets (photos, music, social accounts) often have big emotional value. A Will lets you direct who should receive them and who should care for them.
- Administration is simpler when you name executors and guardians. Appointing people you trust to manage your estate and make practical decisions makes the process quicker and less stressful for family.
This is a practical step that gives you and your family certainty. It is meant to protect the people and things you care about, and to make clear how you want your affairs handled.
I’ll be in touch to arrange a meeting so we can discuss your wishes and prepare a Will that reflects them. If you’d prefer to get started sooner, contact our office and we’ll book a time that suits you.
Kind Regards
