AML/CTF Client Verification Support Page

From 1 July 2026, new Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) obligations will apply to legal professionals across Australia, under the Tranche 2 Reforms.

AUSTRAC is introducing these reforms as part of a broader effort to strengthen protections against fraud, identity misuse and financial crime.

Tranche 2: Explained

We wanted to explain an important distinction about Australia’s AML/CTF reforms.

Some businesses have been subject to AML/CTF regulation for some time. Others are newly regulated under the reforms and came into the regime from 1 July 2026. Here’s what that means for you.

Existing Regulated Businesses (Tranche 1)

Aintree Group Wealth is already regulated; we’ve already built the systems and processes to meet AUSTRAC’s expectations. The ongoing obligations include:

  • Knowing our customers: verify who they are and assess any money laundering or terrorism financing risks they may pose.
  • Monitoring activity: we’re watching for unusual or suspicious transactions and reporting where required.
  • Maintaining an AML/CTF program: our business has policies, procedures and governance in place, with a nominated compliance officer.
  • Keeping records: we hold customer information and transaction records to demonstrate compliance.

Newly Regulated Businesses (Tranche 2)

Aintree Group Chartered Accountants and Aintree Group Legal are coming into regulation for the first time; so we’ve had to build an AML/CTF program from the ground up. This involves:

  • Enrolling with AUSTRAC.
  • Building our AML/CTF program: developing policies and procedures that fit our specific services and business model.
  • Implementing customer due diligence: putting in place processes to identify and verify our clients.
  • Training our team: making sure everyone understands their role in keeping our business compliant.
  • Setting up monitoring and reporting: establishing systems to detect and report suspicious activity.

Why do we charge an AML/CTF fee?

The new AML/CTF Tranche 2 requirements create additional compliance work. In practical terms, the fees charged help cover the time and systems needed to complete Verification of Identity (VOI), Know Your Client (KYC) and Know Your Business (KYB) checks, keep records up to date and monitor for changes throughout the relationship.

These checks are part of the compliance obligations we must meet, and they involve specialist processes, documented reviews and ongoing governance. The fees charged help cover that work so we can meet our obligations consistently and provide a service that remains compliant, reliable and sustainable.

How to Verify Your Identify for AML/CTF Purposes via InfoTrack:

Please note: These instructions are for Aintree Group Legal clients only. If you are an accounting client, please refer to these instructions to verify via Nagaris instead.

The process is completed online and usually takes less than 5 minutes.

Step 2: Upload your identity documents.

Depending on your circumstances, you may be asked to upload documents such as:

  • Driver’s licence
  • Passport
  • Medicare card
  • Proof of address documentation

The system will guide you through exactly what is required.

Step 3: Complete an identity check.

You will then need to verify your identity.

In some situations, the platform may ask you to:

  • Take a selfie, or
  •  Complete a short facial verification check

This helps confirm that the person submitting the documents is the rightful owner of the identification provided.

Step 4: Submit your verification.

After you submit your verification, the system securely processes it and shares the results with our team.

Most verifications are completed within minutes.

Ongoing Verification

If a significant period of time has passed since initial verification, or we are providing a new service, we may need to verify your identity again.

Other Important Considerations

Are you a Politically Exposed Person (PEP)?

Before completing your verification, consider if you or your representative are a PEP, with the different types listed below.

Note: Family members and close business associates of persons who hold one of these positions are also considered politically exposed persons.

Different Requirements For Trusts and Entities

Additional information will typically be required for trusts and entities. However, your Aintree Group adviser will prefill as much of this as possible, on your behalf.

Nonetheless, you will need to provide identity documents.
